Lyric: The Fortune of Lovers
The fortune of lovers is to long for You,
The solace of seekers is to suffer for You.
The alchemy of happiness in both worlds
Is but the dust upon the threshold of Your home.
The mouth that speaks of Your majesty
Becomes as fragrant as the musk of a deer.
The dust upon the path where Your loved ones walk
Becomes the light that brightens every eye.
The fortune of lovers
Is to long for You.
The solace of seekers
Is to suffer for You.
In every breath,
In everything I do,
My heart is searching,
Searching for You.
Whoever lives as a beggar in Your street
Would count the kingdoms of the world as nothing.
The tender grace with which You greet the lovers at dawn
Is born of Your kindness, opening every heart.
What lies beyond the riches of eternity
Is found by lovers dwelling in Your home.
What is greater than the ways of kings
Is the dust of Your heaven-reflecting street.
All others flee from suffering and pain,
Yet this humble servant longs to suffer for You.
The fortune of lovers
Is to long for You.
The solace of seekers
Is to suffer for You.
In every breath,
In everything I do,
My heart is searching,
Searching for You.
If Your pleasure lies within my suffering,
Then all my soul is bound to Your will.
I cannot praise You
As You truly deserve.
Only Your own perfection
Is worthy of Your praise.
If Your pleasure lies within my suffering…
Then all my soul…
Is bound to Your will.
The fortune of lovers
Is to long for You.
The solace of seekers
Is to suffer for You.
In every breath,
In everything I do,
My heart is searching,
Searching for You.
And all this restless searching,
All these words of Farid,
Are nothing but a longing
For the gifts of Your grace.
Farid ud-Din Attar of Nishapur — The Poet of Divine Love
