Landscape Photography in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park: A Motorcycle & Photography Adventure
Landscape photography is one of my favourite ways to explore new places, and last Sunday I combined it with another passion of mine — motorcycle riding. After riding from Bournemouth to Newport on Saturday evening, I spent Sunday exploring the spectacular landscapes around Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, including Pontsticill, Pontsticill Reservoir, Talybont Reservoir and Talybont.
With my camera packed and my Suzuki V-Strom RE ready for the road, I set off early from Newport for a full day of photography, riding and exploring the Welsh countryside.
A Weekend of Motorcycle Riding and Landscape Photography
The adventure began on Saturday afternoon. After finishing work in Bournemouth at around 4 PM, I headed west towards Newport on my Suzuki V-Strom RE.
Rather than making the journey back and forth in one day, I decided to stay overnight in Newport. This allowed me to get an early start on Sunday and spend the entire day exploring Bannau Brycheiniog with my camera.
For me, combining motorcycle touring with photography is the perfect way to discover new landscapes. The motorcycle gives me the freedom to explore different roads, while the camera gives me a reason to stop and appreciate the scenery.
Landscape Photography in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park
Early Sunday morning, I left my hotel in Newport and headed towards Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, formerly known as the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The further I travelled into the park, the more impressive the scenery became. The landscape changed from open countryside to dramatic hills, mountains, reservoirs and winding rural roads.
This is exactly the kind of environment I look for when I’m out doing landscape photography.
Rather than following a strict photography itinerary, I prefer to explore and stop whenever something catches my attention. Sometimes it is the light on a mountain, sometimes a reflection across the water, and sometimes simply an interesting road disappearing into the distance.
Photographing Pontsticill and Pontsticill Reservoir
One of the first areas I explored was Pontsticill, including the beautiful Pontsticill Reservoir.
The reservoir provided some excellent opportunities for landscape photography. The combination of open water, surrounding hills and changing skies created plenty of interesting compositions.
I spent time looking for different viewpoints rather than simply taking one photograph and moving on. Changing my position, perspective and composition can completely alter the way a landscape photograph feels.
Water is also a wonderful element to include in landscape photography because it can add reflections, depth and a strong foreground to an image.
The surrounding Welsh hills provided a natural backdrop, creating a sense of scale and atmosphere in the photographs.
Landscape Photography Around Talybont Reservoir
From Pontsticill, I continued my motorcycle journey towards Talybont Reservoir.
The ride through the countryside was just as enjoyable as the photography. One of the advantages of exploring Wales by motorcycle is being able to travel at your own pace and stop at places that might otherwise be missed.
Talybont Reservoir offered another beautiful setting for landscape photography. The combination of water, mountains, vegetation and open skies created a peaceful atmosphere that was very different from the busy streets and daily routine of home.
I took my time exploring the area and looking for compositions that captured the character of the landscape.
For me, landscape photography isn’t simply about photographing a beautiful view. It is about trying to capture the atmosphere and emotion of a particular place.
Exploring Talybont by Motorcycle
After photographing around Talybont Reservoir, I continued towards Talybont.
By this point, several hours of riding, walking and carrying camera equipment had definitely worked up an appetite.
I stopped for lunch and a well-earned rest at Canalside Cafe at Talybont Stores.
It was the perfect break in the middle of the day. Sitting down, having lunch and taking some time away from the camera gave me a chance to relax before continuing my journey.
One of the things I enjoy about combining photography and motorcycle touring is that the day doesn’t have to be rushed. The journey itself becomes part of the experience.
Why I Love Combining Motorcycle Touring with Landscape Photography
There is something special about travelling through the countryside on a motorcycle with a camera packed away in the luggage.
You are constantly surrounded by changing scenery, and you never quite know when the next photographic opportunity will appear.
A bend in the road can reveal an incredible mountain view. A change in weather can transform the light. A reservoir can suddenly reflect the surrounding landscape perfectly.
The Suzuki V-Strom RE gives me the freedom to explore these places while carrying the camera equipment I need for the day.
This combination of motorcycle riding and landscape photography allows me to experience a location rather than simply visit it.
Capturing the Welsh Landscape
One of the things that makes Bannau Brycheiniog particularly interesting for photographers is the variety of landscapes available within a relatively small area.
Mountain scenery, reservoirs, rural roads, valleys and small communities all provide different subjects to photograph.
The Welsh weather can also add another dimension to landscape photography. Clouds, changing light and atmospheric conditions can completely transform the same viewpoint.
This is why I enjoy returning to outdoor locations with my camera. A landscape is never exactly the same twice.
The time of day, season, weather and light can all change the final image.
From Talybont Back to Bournemouth
After lunch at Canalside Cafe and some time exploring Talybont, it was eventually time to begin the journey home.
I headed back towards Newport before continuing east towards Bournemouth, arriving home in the evening.
It had been a long weekend, but a very rewarding one.
From leaving Bournemouth after work on Saturday to riding through Bannau Brycheiniog on Sunday, the trip combined everything I enjoy about a photography adventure: beautiful scenery, open roads, a motorcycle and plenty of opportunities to take photographs.
Final Thoughts on Landscape Photography in Wales
This trip reminded me that some of the best photography adventures don’t require complicated planning.
Sometimes all you need is a camera, a motorcycle and a destination that inspires you.
Bannau Brycheiniog National Park is an incredible location for landscape photography, with its mountains, reservoirs, valleys and ever-changing Welsh weather providing endless opportunities for photographers.
For me, photography is as much about the journey as the final photograph. Exploring new roads, finding unexpected viewpoints and stopping to appreciate the landscape are all part of the experience.
And after a full day of riding and photographing around Pontsticill, Talybont Reservoir and Talybont, I returned to Bournemouth with plenty of photographs — and another memorable motorcycle adventure to add to the collection.
Until the next ride, there is always another road to explore and another landscape to photograph.
